Improvisational Drama Exercises

Meet San Francisco Bay Area Spiritual Minds

Step Outside Culturally Bound Acting

Improvisation ally Step Outside the Box.
Feelings of magic can come as we free ourselves.
Enter new states of consciousness.

Transcend culturally bound thought patterns:

Improvisation ally act in ways outside typical behavioral patterns.  Unique thoughts and feelings emanate, as we become freer from routine thinking and feeling patterns.

Nurturing Moves:

  • Include feelings of love in your drama.

  • Nurture harmony in your movements and speech.

Safety:

  • Nurturing improvisational drama creates feelings of well being and caring in the room.

  • Try avoiding actions that condemn or ridicule.

  • Feelings of safety help people crawl out of their shell.

Question Your Rules:

  • Which rules help or hurt your imaginative drama experiences?

  • Reconsider the rules by which you behave.

  • Like gravity and civil laws, rules are inevitable, and keep things in place.  Rules give form to routine, and less routine life drama.

  • The creative drama group democratically changes the dramatic rules for the fun of it.  Rules now feel less restrictive as they’re temporary and democratically agreed to.

  • Rules shape drama.  What drama form shall we explore?

  • Select a few rules, include silly ones like:  whisper; exaggerate feelings of skepticism; get silly; pretend we’re children; keep three feet apart from each other.

  • Change arbitrary rules every 15 minutes.  Durations can be extended after the group gets to know each other.

  • Revert back to socially normal role playing for the heck of it.  Discover how this feels different, like coming back to the United States after being abroad for an extend journey.

Possible Drama Forms:

  • Friendly monkey improvisations.

  • Imaginative enchanted monk.

  • Ancient Japanese Noh theater improvisation.  Suave enchanted movements while living in some la la land.  Noh can be more subtle and subliminally provocative than kabuki.

  • Speaking with sound and or words of wonder.

  • Silent motion picture film.

  • Ramble about silly nonsense while retaining some level of rational.

  • British Tea Party: Charming and witty conversations.  Feel partially grounded and restrained, while balancing this with unbounded enchanted imagination.

  • Express curiosity.

Feeling Foolish is OK:

  • Awkward feelings are normal when stepping outside familiar patterns.

  • Feelings of foolishness during improvisational drama with fellows in our drama group, often subsides as we get to know each other.
